For the times they are a-changin
Had a nice meeting with the Museum of Contemporary Art Jax’s Director Deborah Broder and Wendy Stines the Communications Director last night after I got off of work. We had a nice talk about the mission of the museum, and the direction they are headed. I went over a few concepts that I’m copying below with them. All in all it was a very nice meeting.
Deborah was very excited about one concept. There was talk about having a flip book of local artists work in the Gift / Book Store of the museum. In the flip book there would be a digital print of an original. The originals would be sold with the museum receiving a commission. There could be digital prints sold also maybe. Deborah seemed very excited about this concept as were we all. She modified it on the fly actually from the concept labeled Flat Files Project below.
I do think that a small project like this would be a huge step in the right direction. It would be a sign that MOCA is involved directly in the local art community. Tell me what you all think? Do you think a project like this would inspire you to join the museum and become an active member? What types of projects would you suggest?
The concepts below were collected throughout the community. Thank you to everyone who has entered their input. I really appreciate it. Read them over. If you have anything you’d like to add to the discussion, now is the time. Nothing is too silly or grandiose. Obviously concepts that don’t need much money or manpower to do would be given the most attention…..Thanks

Concepts / Brainstorming
Junior Curators
*Junior curators would be selected and allowed to curate a show monthly from local artists in the loading dock or similar area that’s currently not being used. Another space could be just off the elevator on the 5th floor.
Show and Tell
*Local Artists presents work in an open forum style slideshow event
*This could take place thirty minutes prior to the films on Wednesday night. It would take some work to assemble the images and cost for the A/V person to manage the event but it should be doable.
MOCA Selects
*One local contemporary art show is chosen to be the best of Jacksonville contemporary art.
*Showcased with a page on the MOCA main site with photos, video footage of the show. (most likely would not work).
JaxCAL / MOCA partner site
*JaxCAL could be cross branded with the MOCA site. Showcased as JaxCAL a partner with MOCA Jax.
*JaxCAL photo archive of best local contemporary art including all MOCA shows. Great idea.
*George Kinghorn as JaxCAL contributor with weekly or so posts on the shows and the concepts behind them as he is forming those concepts.
*MOCA to join JaxCAL Space / www.space.globatron.org which could also be cross-branded with for MOCA branding.
*When JaxCAL covered local art and what’s happening already, it would be seen as MOCA reaching out to the local art community and being a part of the scene.
MOCA Reader
*Concept for an RSS aggregator blog site for all local art blogs. Could be cross branded to be a MOCA site. This one probably wouldn’t fly.
MOCA Flat Files Project
*Could use the current JaxCAL Space project site with 55 registered users or begin a new site.
*All local artists interested in being part of an archive of local contemporary art.
* Recommend start a new one and have George or someone curate the members into the site.
*George could look through all of the current artists on the site and pick ten pieces a week that could be showcased as a slideshow on the main MOCA site.
JaxCAL video interviews of MOCA artists
*When there are art openings for MOCA shows JaxCAL could do interviews with all artists when they visit town and have that as an ongoing archive.
Artwalk Wiz Bang
*Junior curators are chosen to prepare events for each Artwalk. They present concepts for review to introduce performance art, sound art, installation art, anything experimental into the main lobby for a one day event just for Artwalk.
Artist in Residence
*Even if they had to be off-site if we could find space for them or even have an official designation where that artist could then be available for talks/lectures and work with students that could be a great thing.
A MOCA Biennial
*Once every two or three years have an open, jurored exhibition with George and a couple of guest curators for a show on the THIRD floor.

ALL these proposals have value, many of us are totally busy,
living our lives, doing what we HAVE to do, and do not have a lot of discretionary time, and when we do, it’s spent pursuing our art or
craft, the “promotion….get the stuff out there” game, and all the
attendant effort required, in my case, is something that I could care
less about, I am just not into going down that road at this time, can
see a time when it might be fun, but if I were to get anything ready
to show, that would mean stuff that’s already in my pile, portfolio,
body of work, or old work, and the effort required would divert time and energy that I would rather use towards current projects, have a lot of momentum going, chasing new rainbows.
But, if it was Easy, I would consider the artist display book thing
yeah the display book is a good idea I think. easy to implement and would have a great impact on the local scene I think.
need help?
The more that I think about it, the better the “Display Book”
concept sounds.
Maybe all interested parties could start submitting images to be included in it, anyone who does not have the means to produce images
of their work could be assisted, maybe bring their work to an arranged
“shoot”, this really aint that hard to pull off guys, let’s do it
chris could take the pictures of any work that would be submitted he has camera lenses that can see the rings of saturn and he is one hell of a shooter.
yeah. like that Chris. great input. Right now I’d really just like to see if you all are interested in the concepts or would like to add to them.
I know the flip book concept is being taken seriously, so yeah, please add input on how you’d like to do it, etc.
I don’t think it would be hard to do at all. And we could organize it for her if she doesn’t have the man hours available on staff.
Thanks for asking Scott. appreciate it. not yet. thank you though. like your self portrait idea for a show. that would be really point blank and everyone could participate in it as I’m sure we’ve all done a self portrait. if not they are great exercises as I remember. haven’t done one in ten years but maybe I should.
These are all great ideas. I know I rarely comment here anymore. But I just wanted to say that.
thanks Brittni. no worries. feel free to comment anytime. really appreciate it.
really do think there will be a couple of really positive steps very soon.
Good topic to kick around Saturday.
I am thinking about making an appearance, is it at
Uncommon Grounds, down from Paneras?
Uncommon Grounds is correct, Chris. We should ask the owner about donating art for the auction coming soon, too.
What auction, if I might ask? It is a benefit……I frequently
fall out of the loop, please enlighten me
Diane isn’t organizing it, but some of the guys that work there are. Next Saturday from 12 to whenever, there will be a performance/art auction for the benefit of Uncommon Grounds (which is facing some shady stuff soon if funds don’t sprout out of the ground after a rainstorm). Kat and I asked Diane about when to bring in art, and as far as she knows, just in the evening or so during the week. You should write the details buyers tend to be curious about (size, medium, whatever), and then I think you’ll be good. I’m donating some linocuts, Kat’s donating some things.
kat and kelly sorry i have missed some saturday meetings lately, we have been very busy with baseball, i will drop by with a donation and maybe scared rabbits will perform. i have a game that saturday morning, i should be able to attend the afternnoon festivities.
