Some of the attacks during the RNC were quite low. I found it odd that the only one who seemed to try and rise above was McCain in his speech. He had very few attacks. He might have told the rest of the party to follow his lead as they came off very “I know you are but what am I.” Like fifth graders with potty mouths. No facts. All fear mongering. As they say, “More of the Same.” The world is watching. Don’t they understand the significance of this election? To them it seems to be all about winning or losing. The world is watching and the last thing we need is more fear mongering.
I hope Obama continues to rise above.
Loved his come back, “I’ve been called worse on a basketball court.”
Stick ans Stones kind of thing.

Obama is smooth!
Well, i too saw that contrast between McCain and the general RNC. I am positive that was constructed. He needs to reclaim his Maverick status, so showing independence was key in that speech. I now see the Palin as possibly genius for the Repub ticket. He was having difficulty attracting the base (fundies, social conservatives) SHE takes care of that. SHe is not intended to attract many Clintonites AT ALL. She is a pawn for the base.
NOW, all McCain has to try to accomplish the next to months is brand himself as the true independent, omewhat separate and challenging to those fundies. His appeal in the past as a possible GOP reformer rested on that perception. Now he can maybe regain that to get some of them independent voters WHILE holding on to the base thru Palin.
GENIUS I say!
Well, we shall see. I hope peeps see thru the gameplayin.
I just talked in depth to a Palin supporter and she’s really into it. And the main reason was the pro-life issue.
So I told her good for her and it’s great she knows why she’s supporting her. The thing I’m scared of is a lot of folks not knowing why they support her and just voting for her because she’s a woman.
It was a nice conversation we had actually. That is a real divider issue for most folks.
We both talked about how it’d be nice if we could all come to a middle ground on it. I think that would be nice so we could think about all the other issues that get little attention because of the pro-life issue. It’d be nice if there really was a middle ground on it, but for some reason there doesn’t seem to be one in sight.
I think that there is a middle ground available for folks willing to go there. Obama even mentioned in his acceptance speech- we can agree on finding ways to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies.
But yes for some on the extreme of this issue I am sure there is no such compromise. Even I cannot compromise on the related issue of abortion in the case of rape, incest, or health of the mother. Im sorry, I cannot see a ethical society forcing a mother to accept death rather than abort her 2 month old fetus. Nor could I see one force her TO abort if she does not choose to.
But we are talking about very extreme cases, very rare cases at that. Certainly it is unwise to be gridlocked over an aspect of an issue that happens in what? .005 percent of cases (i dont know the percentages here).
I am glad you had a respectful conversation. One of my best buddies in grad school was pro-life, her art was even about that (the first pro-life art I had ever encountered -before or since!) But I think the world of her even tho we are at total ends of that spectrum on this issue.
I am 100 % sure she will be voting McCain/Palin.
Anyone catch Obama on O’Rielly last night? I am sure that will be a true test of Barack’s calm grace.

I agree Mark, Palin was not chosen to get the Clinton vote, she was chosen to be the attack dog. The presidential candidates can rise above while the v..p.s can get a little dirty.
Abortion and gay marriage are just about the only things we can understand. Either a candidate is for it or against it. I’m still not sure about Obama’s health care policies or McCain’s economic policies, but I’m exactly sure where they stand on pro-life vs. pro-choice. So not only is it a hot button topic on morality, but it’s also a topic we get.One we understand.
(HERE’S WHAT I UNDERSTAND ABOUT THEPRO-LIFERS. I DON’T AGREE.)
If you think a baby is made at conception and you are morally against anyone killing that baby, then that means every baby has the right to live no matter how it was created, or what it may do to the mother. It’s totally black and white. You can’t be against third term abortion, but okay with it in the first term. You can’t be against killing a baby, but okay with killing a baby from rape.
For me personally abortion is very gray. It’s easy for me to say “I think it should be left up to the woman”, because it lets me off the hook. I wonder if I would feel differently if I were a woman, or more specifically if I ever carried a baby. I wonder if I could be more resolute in my decision, either way. So, I may not agree with turning back roe v wade, but I can sympathize with the argument.
As far as gay marriage, or gays in the military, give me a break, why does anyone care. This controversy reeks of fundamental religious beliefs.

Isn’t there something Tina Fey-ish sexy about Palin? And doesn’t her husband seem like a Tim McGraw-ish douchebag?
