Okay now for a bit of context. The music is by Scared Rabbits as it says. The song is “The Send Out”. This was a collaboration between myself and Morrison Pierce.
I had been speaking about doing a performance piece where I howled like a wolf and about how I felt like cleansing myself through that. I’ve had so many chemicals and medical procedures the past few months a performance that was symbolic of cleansing seemed in order.
I’m wearing a plastic polar bear mask with a ski mask on top. So I was sweating like I was in a sauna by the end of the song. Hence the name Sweat Lodge. I actually felt cleansed afterward as if I had given my confession.
Earlier in the day I went to my Father-in-Laws church which is the family tradition for Easter Sunday. Not being a Christian my mother always seems to get into a discussion about my belief system and how I will most likely go to Hell. I told her I could not condemn all other religions to Hell for not believing in Jesus. It was a heated discussion and we had to end it to save face.
So after my family gathering Morrison arrived with his 4-track player/recorder, amplifier set up and gear to let me have a sneak preview of the music him and Scared Rabbits had been working on. The timing and music was perfect. It just happened.
Now while looking at it I notice I have quite a beer belly. And it’s true I do have a gut, but the tightness of both shirts I believe insinuates that even more making it even more profound. The character Polartron (the alter-ego of globatron) would not be nearly as interesting to me if he was not out of shape. The working out with the dumbbells to me is symbolic of cleansing. Of trying to get the body back in order. If my body was already back in order I wouldn’t need to be working out.
So there ya go. A little background info on the piece. To me I got more out of this performance than I did our Easter Sunday service. Looking through the plastic eye holes of that mask, feeling the sweat role off my forehead, I felt like I was closer to the creator or mystery of the universe than I have been in a long time.
jim was telling me last week about his sweat lodge experience in a teepee, sweat it out, who knows maybe the deep soul cleansing worked, i recommend the same workout at least twice a week.
