Season to Reason

I have flown these skies
Viewed space with these eyes
Trying to find a place to live
To make my nest
Flying by moonlight
Seen super box stores
Suburbs squared and rectangle
Cities grown out of nothing
A once mighty jungle tamed
And re-framed

I have watched my kind grow
I have seen greed choke the many
A stab of our sharpened spears
Our eyes too big to see
The size of fish that swim down
Our crooked throats
The depth of the waters
On which we walk and float

I have waited out the drought
Seen the heavens open up
Season after season
Waiting for the right
Reason to leave this land
Never to return
Never to see the sun
That birthed the Great Heron
