what is your process for making these? how long. what tools? the creative process? i’d like to make something similar one day but I’m worried it will take me too long.
how did you learn garage band so well?
well done as always. love the new sponsor.
thanks. i’ve gotten the whole process down to a couple of hours. it takes maybe twenty or thirty minutes to write the script–after leisurely reading the Times or watching the morning news. then i record my voice on a podcast track. the sound effects are mostly from the stuff that comes with garage band. it’s just a matter of cutting, pasting, splicing and so forth using multiple tracks. i don’t know if i’ve learned garage band very well; i’ve been playing around with it for a little over a year.
as far as the ideas for each piece–i’m not sure. it doesn’t happen in a linear way. i try to identify one theme that i’ll stick with for each piece, but the theme isn’t something that i look for when i sit down and read the paper. it emerges sort of organically from my frustrations and disgust over the headlines. and often they merge with stuff we’ve been doing on the site. that’s the hope, at least–but i don’t try and force anything. part of the process is my decision that i’m not putting it into one genre. so i don’t really see it as comedy, for example, even though it does have that Weekend Update kind of thing going on. that’s just part of the format; i’m not really going for laughs.
i listened to this one last night…amazing stuff logocentric…it’s a real wonderful addition to the globatron legacy…bravo once again…
thanks for sharing your process. it sounds doable on my half. i had imagined you were some sort of garage band genius and have worked on it for a decade or more. it’s amazing what you can do with so little.
i need to get my podcast on. keep it coming mate. can’t wait to see how it progresses.
