Yesterday I went downtown under the Fuller Warren Bridge for the first ever Riverside Arts Market (RAM). I had anticipated this for several weeks and had done a post earlier here. What a difference a police estimate of 41,000 people make to turn it into a cultural gathering spot. It was an outstanding turnout, no one could have expected. This event happens every Saturday from 10-4 and seems to be the cultural catalyst that Jacksonville has needed for decades. If you didn’t make it this weekend it’s every Saturday through December so you’ll have plenty of chances to check it out.
This video has a short interview with RAM director Tony Allegretti, and Matt from www.bikejax.org who is doing free valet bike parking. So there are no excuses to not ride your bike down to RAM every weekend. There is no doubt a little something for everyone.
This is a basic photo set of the walk through of RAM around 3pm. It will definitely help give you an idea of the magnitude of this event and how positively it will impact Jacksonville.
this is an awesome post, that bridge is an awesome backdrop, like some post-apocalyptic street fair, reminds me of what a fair from the middle ages might have been like.
i especially like the contrast between the 2 musicians at the end, reminds me a bit of our recent conversations on globatron.
great reportage!
i estimate there were 300,000 people there, that my official estimate.
great post byron. i’m so excited for the turnout.
it’s just about 3 blocks from my apartment so i got
to walk up to the festival w/ my dog and was amazed
at how many people there were.
Terrific post. Thanks so much for the extensive interview–really captured the flavor the market. I agree with Akbar about the setting–almost neo-Gothic.

Well this post got a couple hundred hits today so I’m glad folks enjoyed looking at the documentation. Thanks Akbar.
It’s definitely a great setting for an Art Fair.
I love our conversations. I can’t imagine wanting to delete them. This is an archive of my life. To me it’d be like burning the family photo albums.
