a call for donations, submissions, ideas…

19 September 2007 3 Comments

Riverside Avondale Development Organization (RADO), is asking for artists who would like to offer items to a silent auction fundraiser taking place on November 3rd. RADO works to keep affordable housing in Riverside, and tries to build green whenever possible (with energy efficiency measures similar to Energy Star ratings).

We can offer 20% of the final auction price (because we should support artists, not take advantage of them), and free admission to the party.

I’m the new kid at the office, and don’t know the first thing about silent auction fundraisers. I’ll just throw this idea at you folks and see how it lands. I remember back in New York at one auction (of the dozens he participated in) my boss, a photographer, donated a comisssioned portrait instead of an extant piece of work. Someone bid on getting a Joel Sternfeld photo taken of them. I don’t recall if he ever actually completed the darn thing, but it seemed like a neat idea.

Probably would only work for photographers, because painting just takes too long. Anyhow, if anyone wants to offer a piece for the fundraiser, please get in touch.

I’m sorry but does that mean that 20% of final auction price goes to the artists? That sounds pretty cool. I like the concept.

Also, could you put more information on here about RADO and what the mission is when you get a chance.. I’m not sure everyone knows what RADO does.

Reason being I think the mission is perfect for artists and especially artists who are art professors and school teachers.

    Thanks for posting this.

    cheers.

    Sorry so long in replying…
RADO works within Riverside (and by that I mean mostly north of College Street and from Stockton to McDuff, extending north all the way into North Riverside) to provide obtainable housing. We help connect first time buyers within a certain range from the Duval County median income with subsidies and assistance grants to purchase homes. We build some and renovate some (and do a darn fine job, I have to say…these aren’t habijax shacks by any means…not that I could shake a stick at what that group does, it’s just a VERY different ball game in a historic district.)
RADO was started by some members of RAP a decade ago to try to keep some diversity of incomes in this pricey historic district.
Recently (and this why I, your local climate change activist, got involved with the group) RADO has been supplying their properties with EnergyStar appliances, CFLs, and will be pursuing LEED level construction for some new developments.
The fellow who runs RADO is really interested in the benefits of infill development (environmentally as well as socially), and has a lot of good ideas for the now-somewhat-busted area of North Riverside. My photography deals with the built environment and its problematics, so I enjoy working at a place where I get to think about all that…
So…that’s the scoop! Any other questions?
